Dengue Fever.

So it turns out that Brandon did indeed have Dengue Fever. It sounds foreign and strange, and that’s really because it is!! It’s not common in the United States at all. It’s a sickness from a mosquito bite (those buggards, do they do anything good??) He got a severe fever, a consistent 103 for five days, bad body aches, full body rash including palms and bottom of his feet, his white blood cell count was low, as was his blood platelets, and his blood pressure! The sweet Dr. in Fallbrook didn’t have a clue (Bless his heart, at least he admitted he doesn’t see a lot of dengue in our small town!) and we saw a specialist and emailed the nurses in Haiti. He was in bed seven full days, and has finally ventured out to the land of the living. Thank you to the MANY of you who prayed for a healing for his body! The Lord healed him, and allowed me to have wisdom in how to treat and take care of him. There were a few scary nights when his fever spiked up to 104!! There are four/five types/strands of it, and it seems he had the moderate to severe one. It could have been worse, and we are so thankful he is better. Turns out a famous surfer just died of Dengue Fever, and while Brandon now loves to remind me or anyone listening that he had a disease someone died of (usually when he wants to extract more sympathy!), the news reports Andy Irons more likely died of  drug related issues mixed with dengue fever.

So, we planned to head back to Haiti Monday the 1st. But since we thought a few more days of rest would be good, and we had a team coming down the 4th, we would just go back with them. However, the team had to cancel at the last minute (mainly due to the hurricane quickly making it’s way straight towards Haiti) and we had hoped to leave today to avoid more change fees. Yet, we just learned the airlines actually cancelled the flight cause it was scheduled to land Friday morning right when the hurricane would hit. Now, we wait, and looks like we may be heading back Sunday night. We’ll keep ya posted!!!

North Coast Church-Carlsbad

Remember how I told you our pastor and his son (along with four other awesome people) came to visit us in Haiti? Well, our pastor, JD, was so excited about his trip that he wanted to tell the whole church!!! So, after first and second service he did a “grandpa’s slideshow”  with pictures, videos, and shared about his trip to Haiti. It was so encouraging to see his continued excitement, enthusiasm and support for what we are doing-and then to share that with members from our church-it was such a huge blessing.  Another cool thing that happened that day was we went in during sunday school and shared with the little K-3 graders and the Junior High. They both give their gifts and tithes on Sunday to help feed children in Haiti. How awesome is that?? Kids helping kids. Kids giving money here to feed children there, my heart rejoices over this!! And, my favorite part was in our time with the K-3 children, was at the end one of the kids came up and prayed for the children in Haiti, and Brandon and me. Oh Lord you used the little children that day to restore  and refresh my soul!!

Little kids praying for Haiti, and for Brandon and me. SO sweet!
The kids were unsure of the food at first.. until a brave soul went for it… then they all tried it and wanted more! I told ’em if they moved to Haiti they could have it six days a week! 🙂

One other great thing we did was bring home some of the Feed My Starving Children food (the exact same food we cook in Haiti) and made it at church!! Two couples volunteered to make the food exactly how we make it in Haiti. They added all the same spices, oils, and additives to make it authentic!! They even cooked it on an outside pot, which was great cause it got the attention of everyone going by! This was so fun to have the people at our church try the food we are serving in Haiti. And, the consensus was….”This is actually really good!!” “Tastes like rice a roni!”

Richard cooking up the food…
Kathie and Ellen did an amazing job making the food!! It looked, smelled and tasted just like it does in Haiti!!

OTB on FM 94.9’s The Mikey Show

The OTB staff went to The Mikey Show this morning!

For those of you who don’t know the Mikey Show, it’s a pretty famous morning talk show, that airs in our area every weekday from about 6am-10am. He is a hilarious guy, (who just so happens to love the Lord and have a heart of gold) who also has a super fun staff, including Woods, LOB, Jay and Chris.

We debated all morning who would talk and represent OTB on air. Of course my vote was Brandon, but since he is sick, still sick, and not getting better sick, he had to stay home! I was bad a wife and pumped him with drugs and left him for a few hours to go the show!! He was doted after by his mom, so I knew he was just fine! Anyway, the OTB staff voted on me (I was out numbered) since I do live in Haiti. As much as I love to talk-yes shock me shock me-I kinda get freaked out with stuff like this. I either clam up and stumble around saying random things, or talk really high pitched and super fast. So, I think I was a combination of the two!!!

I think the highlight for me was to meet Mikey, since I have heard such good things about him and his huge interest in OTB. He is actually planning on visiting Nov 4th and Brandon and are excited to have him come and experience Haiti first hand! I loved listening to the show all morning-and not just for the multiple plugs he gave to OTB and what we’re doing, but I just loved seeing his heart. In fact, like the emotional train wreck I am, I started crying on the air, as he told me after I answered a few questions of how he came to know of OTB and wanted to get involved. I saw how much the Lord used a video months ago that the talented OTB staff made to capture his heart and move him to be a part of OTB. I loved what he said how sometimes you just know when something/someone/some organization just has your name on it and you know God is telling you to be a part of that. I love that! Cause we are all just asked to listen to the Lord and be obedient in whatever He asks of us. And listening to his show, (being reminded by Jesse just minutes before I spoke that over 500,000 people listen to this show!!) I saw what God was doing with an obedient heart. He broadcasts to a secular crowd and unashamedly talks about Jesus. He is funny while still maintaining integrity. And, shock me shock me, I cried again at the end. Each time he ends the show telling a little bit about his testimony.. something to encourage others listening who might be lost, alone, hopeless-that if God can turn Him around and give him hope then he can for anyone. You should listen to that part too!

Anyway, here are two ways to check it out. One is from the OTB website, the other from the 94.9 webstite:
